Fireflies in a jar, that's exactly what this project concerns!

instead of the real ones, we used some LEDs that simulate the fireflies behaviour turning on and off in random sequences managed by a microcontroller.

MAX6955 - Library and explanation

postdateiconFriday, 27 January 2012 19:35 | Print | Email | Hits: 66

Working on the Autopilot Panel for Boeing 737 project for FSX we needed a driver for mutiple 7 segments displays; the biggest problem with this kind of display is in fact the great expense of I/O ports, and the need for a great number of resistors. You can solve all in one shot (an expensive one) with MAX6955, a common cathode display driver from Maxim that can drive 16 7 segments and works with I2C protocol.

You can find the datasheet here

The datasheet is full of info but, given this chip can drive a LARGE nuber of devices of many many kinds (16 segments, 14 segments, bicolor 7 segments, led packs) a bit of crawling thru tables is required to understand what goes where.

MCP23018 - Library and explanation

postdateiconThursday, 26 January 2012 23:46 | Print | Email | Hits: 141

The Autopilot panel for Boeing 737 project needed a good inupt/output expander; we finally choose MCP23018 produced by Microchip, which has an I2C connection (there's also the SPI version, MCP23S18) and two 8 bit registers for input output, configured as open-drain (if you don't know what this means, the chip can only give logical 0 state, while logical state 1 is gained thru pull-up resistors and setting the port to high impedance), and bit-by-bit activated internal pull-ups.

You can get the datasheet here.
